Trauma-Informed Care in 16+ Supported Accommodation: Why It Matters

Many young people entering 16+ supported accommodation carry with them histories of instability, neglect, or adverse childhood experiences. Without a trauma-informed approach, even the most well-resourced placement can struggle to achieve positive outcomes.

At Oasis Home Services, trauma-informed practice is embedded into everything we do — from how our staff communicate, to how our therapeutic sessions are structured.

What Does Trauma-Informed Mean?

Trauma-informed care means understanding that a young person’s behaviour is often a response to past experiences — not a character flaw. It means:

  • Responding with empathy, not punishment
  • Creating predictable, safe environments
  • Building trust before expecting compliance
  • Recognising triggers and de-escalating calmly
  • Working collaboratively with the young person on their own goals

Our Therapeutic Approach

Oasis integrates in-house therapeutic support within our placements. Sessions focus on emotional literacy, trauma awareness, self-regulation strategies, and resilience building. Where needed, we liaise directly with CAMHS and external professionals.

This is not bolt-on support — it is part of how we operate daily.

The Outcome

When young people feel safe, understood, and supported, placement stability improves. Engagement with education and employment increases. And the pathway to independence becomes achievable rather than overwhelming.

Trauma-informed care is not a luxury. It is the foundation of effective 16+ provision.
