Preparing Young People for Independence: What Really Works

community time

Supporting a young person towards independence is one of the most important — and complex — challenges in supported accommodation. At Oasis Home Services, we work every day with young people aged 16+ who are transitioning from care into adult life.

True independence is not just about having a roof over your head. It requires life skills, emotional stability, employment readiness, and a strong support network.

What Our Independence Programme Covers

At Oasis, our Structured Independence Pathway moves young people through four key stages:

Stabilisation — We begin with a full risk assessment, safeguarding plan, and emotional stabilisation. Every young person is different, and we tailor support from day one.

Development — We focus on practical life skills: budgeting, cooking, maintaining a home, managing appointments, and building daily routines.

Participation — We actively engage young people in education, employment, and training (EET). Our dedicated EET Coach works one-to-one weekly to build confidence and create real pathways.

Transition — We support young people to move on confidently, whether into further education, employment, or independent tenancy.

Why This Matters

Without structured support, young people leaving care are at significantly higher risk of homelessness, unemployment, and mental health difficulties. A joined-up approach — combining housing, therapeutic input, and employment coaching — makes the difference between a young person thriving and one who falls through the gaps.

At Oasis, we do not simply house young people. We invest in their futures.
